Herringbone is a classic format largely used in the past because it was easy to manufacture and easy to replace if damaged.
Old style herringbone was often only 60mm wide and 300mm long as anything larger or longer would have bent or warped. Solid herringbone is still manufactured for listed building and it does have its own appeal.
Modern herringbone is instead almost always engineered and standard format are bit longer typically 90mm wide and 500mm long or 600mm long. Large herringbone are also available even 240mm extra wide planks are often used to create a very specific look on larger surfaces.
